In late January a group of 10 people gathered in Melbourne to participate in the first MATES in Construction Speakers Bureau training.
We have found over the years that there are many people associated with the industry who have a story to tell. The Speakers Bureau provides a safe space to develop skills to tell your story.
The members of the MATES in Construction Speakers Bureau have all been touched by suicide in some way and they have taken the next big step to talk about their experience.
MATES in Construction partnered with Roses in the Ocean and Suicide Prevention Australia to provide three days of working together and individually to build their stories.
Over those three days the speakers learnt how to present their wisdom and experience of being touched by suicide to a variety of audiences. The aim of the bureau is to help raise awareness of the impact of suicide, what developments are being made in suicide prevention and how everyone with our community can help in reducing the number of suicides in the construction industry.
By telling their stories we can help to reduce the stigma associated with suicide.
